People of the Bible: Moses

The Life of Moses:

First 40 years:

  • His mother put him in a basket near the Nile river as a baby to save him from Pharaoh because he was killing Hebrew boys.

  • Pharaoh’s daughter finds him near the river and brings him into Pharaoh’s palace to raise him.

  • When he becomes older he tries to take up for one of his fellow Hebrew men, but he ends up killing an Egyptian.

  • He is forced to flee, and he lives the next 40 years of his life in the wilderness.

Second 40 years:

  • Moses marries his wife and becomes a shepherd.

  • One day God speaks to Moses through a burning bush.

    • God tells him that He will use Moses to save his people and deliver them from Egyptian bondage.

Third 40 years:

  • Moses is used by God, to bring the 10 plagues against Egypt.

  • Moses leads the people out of Egypt.

  • He leads the Israelites for 40 years while they wander in the wilderness.

Moses is one of the great men of faith in the Bible. He always had a heart for his people, we see that when he tried to save the one man by killing the Egyptian. But he had the timing wrong, God needed to prepare him more. While Moses was in the wilderness, he learned how to be humble. The Bible even says that Moses was the most humble man on earth (Numbers 12:3). This allowed God to use him without it getting to his head. The more time Moses spent with God, the more he could trust and wait for Him. In God’s perfect timing, Moses was able to save his people from slavery.

Moses led the Israelites through one of the toughest times in their history. He wasn’t able to enter the Promised Land, but he prepared the people in the wilderness to be ready for when the time came to take the land.

Moses continually spoke to God and asked for his direction. The Bible says that Moses and God were so close that Moses would speak to God like he was speaking to a friend (Exodus 33:11).

Moses led the people out of slavery and prepared them to accept the Promised Land. This kind of leadership foreshadowed what Jesus would do for us. We are all a slave to sin, but Jesus came to deliver us from this sin by dying on the cross. And when we believe in him, we can enter the promised land of Heaven.

Key Takeaways:

  • Trust in God’s perfect timing

  • Look to God for direction

  • Look to Jesus for salvation & forgiveness of sins!
