Mary & Joseph

Updated: Dec 21, 2022

Bible Story: Luke 1, Matthew 1

Mary and Joseph were Jesus’s parents. They were engaged to be married when an angel came to visit Mary. The angel told her that she would have a baby and that baby would be the son of God. Mary asked how this would happen because she was not married yet. The angel reassured her that this baby would be born through a miracle. God himself placed Jesus in Mary’s womb. Mary accepted what the angel told her, and months later, Jesus was born.

At first, Joseph questioned Mary. Joseph thought Mary had been unfaithful to him. Because of this, Joseph decided to break off the engagement, but he did it quietly because he was a righteous man. However, before he could break off the engagement, an angel appeared to him. The angel told Joseph not to separate from Mary because it was the Holy Spirit that placed the baby inside Mary’s womb. Joseph listened to the angel, and he married Mary.

Besides the two biblical accounts in Luke 1 and Matthew 1 we do not know a whole lot about Mary and Joseph. They were a poorer family living mostly in smaller towns throughout Jesus’s life. Joseph was a carpenter. He would have taught Jesus this trade, and this is more than likely what Jesus did before he started his ministry. We know that Mary and Joseph would have taught Jesus about God. In Luke 2, we see that Mary and Joseph take Jesus to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover festival.

Mary’s name comes up quite a bit throughout the gospels and Acts. This shows us that she would have supported Jesus and followed him throughout his ministry. Historically she is thought of very highly in the church.

We can assume that Jesus lived a fairly normal childhood. He would have played with other kids and learned how to live life like the rest of us. That was God’s point in sending him to earth as a human. He interjected himself into our condition in order to relate to us better. Jesus was fully God, but he was also fully man. Eventually, Jesus would die for all of humanity’s sins, and whoever believes that he was God made flesh will get to spend eternity with him in heaven.

Key Takeaways:

  • God placed Jesus in Mary

  • Angels visited Mary and Joseph

  • Jesus is fully God and fully man
