The Holy Spirit is something that both the Old and New Testaments speak about. In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit was known to come upon people during a special moment. Think of the prophets when they are speaking for God. Or King David when God was using him to do miraculous things. However, in the New Testament, we see the Holy Spirit take on a different role.
Before Jesus ascended into heaven, he told his followers that he was going to send the Holy Spirit to them. We see this fulfilled in Acts 2 at Pentecost, where the Holy Spirit filled a room full of people.
The Holy Spirit, along with Jesus and God the Father, make up what is known as the Trinity. They are not separate gods but united, making the one true God. The Trinity can be a complex idea. Many have tried to explain it, but the simplest way to understand it is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all God revealing himself in a unique way.
The Bible tells us a lot about the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is Christ on the inside of us. When Jesus was on earth, he was God with us. But after his ascension, the Spirit became God in us. The Holy Spirit came to be a comforter and a guide for us on our spiritual journey.
One thing the Spirit does is show Christians the way they should live. The Holy Spirit encourages us to do the right things, and it convicts us when we do the things we shouldn’t do. The Spirit acts as a guide for us, teaching us along the way. The Spirit can also help us pray for things and people when we do not know how or what to pray.
Another thing the Spirit does is give us power. Romans 8:11 tells us that the same spirit that raised Jesus Christ from the dead now dwells in the hearts and minds of those who believe in him. Throughout the New Testament, we see believers do incredible miracles through this power. That same power is available today to anyone who believes.
When we consider everything Jesus did for us, like coming to earth and dying for our sins, it is hard to believe that it was for our good that he would leave. How is it that it benefits us if the Savior leaves? It is hard to believe until we look and see what the Spirit wants to do in our lives. The Spirit wants to be a significant part of us, and the more we listen and obey, the more we will sense that presence. The Spirit is available to anybody that believes Jesus died as a sacrifice for their sins. It is simply up to us how much we take advantage of the guidance and power that comes along with this gift.
